Asian Heritage Month – Opening Ceremony

Asian Heritage Month kicks opens with Grand Performance
KELOWNA, BC, May 3rd – The public is invited to come experience a great event that highlights the numerous Asian cultures that are alive and well throughout the city of Kelowna. Attendees can take part in food, dance, massage, and other ceremonies from the numerous Asian nations around the world and watch performances from world-famous artists such as Art Lee, the only non-Japanese person to ever win the world’s most prestigious Taiko contest.
The opening begins at 5:30pm and admission is free to experience the displays and demonstrations which include Japanese tea ceremonies, kendo practice, and other activities. Displays are open until 9:30pm. The grand performance cost is for admission and runs from 6:45pm until 9pm. It includes the ensemble ‘Liberta’ from our sister city Kasugai in Japan, David Tam presenting unique instrumentals from China, in addition to numerous dancers, martial artists, and other performers from India, Korea, and other Asian cultures. The tickets for the grand performance tickets can be purchased at Komatsu Japanese Restaurant & Leo’s Video.
Ken Fix, one of the organizers for Asian Heritage Month, has this to say: “Bring your spirit of Asia to the opening ceremonies and experience some of the culture that Asian-Canadians have shared within communities across Canada for many years. Become aware of many of the traditions that all Canadians have incorporated into their everyday lives that have come from Asian influence and open yourself to new and interesting customs that could change your life. Let's get curious!”
May is Asian heritage month, sponsored by the Sister City Association, the City of Kelowna, Kelowna Community Resources, the Japan Foundation, and numerous Asian community groups. There will be numerous events throughout May to highlight the special Asian cultures that help make the city of Kelowna the multicultural community that it is!
